Actually River Kwai is pronounced and spelled in Thailand as River Kwae as Kwai is literally an insult meaning "a buffalo." This is equivalent to the "f" word in Thai society so be careful how you pronounce the river name:)
Now down to the lunching options:
1. You could be part of a group tour and have lunch on a floating raft while you are tugged upriver and downriver. Quite a nice experience if you do not feel seasick or riversick. It is also a very leisurely meal so do not sign up for this if your itinerary is hectic.
2. A riverside and bridgeside restaurant: Floating pontoons which are firmly anchored are your second choice. This affords you a magnificient view of the Bridge over the River Kwae, the Kwae River and the opposite bank with its lady Buddha gigantic statue.
3. There are some upmarket restaurants on the river with aircon. Since Kanchanaburi tends to get rather hot, this may be a very practical choice if you are huffing and puffing after seeing the locomotives and the Bridge.
You are guaranteed though of great food at reasonable prices at the restaurants around the Bridge.
